Iran Launches 200 Missiles at Israel in Retaliation

On October 1, 2024, Iran launched a significant ballistic missile attack on targets in Israel, marking the largest attack during the ongoing Iran–Israel conflict. The attack, codenamed Operation True Promise II, involved approximately 200 missiles launched in at least two waves, targeting various locations in Israel. The Iranian attack was reportedly carried out in retaliation for Israel’s alleged assassinations of high-ranking officials, including Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, and IRGC general Abbas Nilforoushan.

Iran claimed that the attack was an act of self-defense, although the effectiveness of the attack in causing extensive damage is unclear. According to Israeli officials, the country’s air defenses were able to intercept most of the incoming missiles, with no harm reported to the Air Force’s capabilities.

The US Navy and Jordan also reported intercepting missiles, suggesting a coordinated effort to counter the Iranian attack. Despite the large number of missiles launched, the damage caused by the attack appears to have been limited, with the area of the Nevatim Airbase in the Negev being hit by 20 to 32 missiles. The attack resulted in two fatalities: a Palestinian man in Gaza who was killed by debris from an intercepted missile, and an Israeli man who died due to a shock-induced heart attack.

In addition to these fatalities, four Palestinians, two Israelis, and two Jordanians sustained minor injuries. The relatively low number of casualties and injuries suggests that the attack, while significant in terms of the number of missiles launched, did not have a major impact on the ground.

The Iranian attack on October 1, 2024, was the second direct attack by Iran against Israel, following the April 2024 strikes. The fact that Iran was able to launch a larger and more sophisticated attack in October suggests that the country may be increasing its military capabilities and willingness to engage in direct conflict with Israel. The ability of Israeli air defenses to intercept most of the incoming missiles, however, suggests that the country’s military is also capable of responding effectively to such attacks.

International Response

The international community is likely to be watching the situation closely, given the potential for further escalation in the region. The fact that the US Navy and Jordan were involved in intercepting missiles suggests that there may be a coordinated international effort to counter Iranian aggression. As the situation continues to unfold, it will be important to monitor the responses of other countries in the region, as well as the actions of international organizations such as the United Nations.

Looking ahead, it is unclear what the next steps will be in the conflict between Iran and Israel. The fact that Iran has launched two significant attacks in recent months suggests that the country may be willing to continue to escalate the situation.

At the same time, the ability of Israeli air defenses to respond effectively to the attacks suggests that the country is capable of defending itself. As the situation continues to evolve, it will be important to watch for further developments and to consider the potential implications for the region and the wider international community.
