Ukraine Deploys Drones to Strike Deep Inside Russia in Escalating Warfare

Drones

KYIV, July 13 — Ukraine has moved from defending its skies to striking deep inside Russia with a growing arsenal of domestically produced drones. What started as a tactical adaptation has become a strategic capability. The numbers tell part of the story.

In 2023, Ukraine reportedly produced over 200,000 drones of various types. The ambition for 2024 is even bolder: plans to scale production to 1 million units.

The hardware is increasingly sophisticated. Ukraine has deployed several key models designed for long-range strikes. The UJ-22 Airborne can reach targets up to 800 km away.

The PD-1 pushes further, with a range up to 1,000 km. Then there is the Liutyi drone, a longer-range platform estimated to fly over 1,000 km.

Ukraine has also adapted Soviet-era Tu-141 Strizh drones for new missions. These aren’t simple surveillance craft. The drones are typically equipped with GPS guidance and explosive warheads.

The reported April 28, 2024 attack on an oil depot in Stavropol Krai demonstrated exactly this — a Ukrainian drone hitting a fuel storage site hundreds of kilometers inside Russian territory.

Adapting to the counter

Russia has not stood still. Electronic warfare systems have been deployed specifically to jam drone signals and disrupt guidance. But what’s changing is the Ukrainian response.

Operators have adapted by flying at low altitudes, skimming terrain to stay under radar and jamming coverage. Swarm tactics — sending multiple drones simultaneously — further complicate Russian defenses.

Battlefield impact

The strategic effect is hard to overstate. By striking deep into Russian territory, Ukraine can target logistics hubs, fuel depots, and supply chains without risking manned aircraft or pilots. Morale on the Russian side takes a hit when supply depots burn hundreds of kilometers from the front lines.

The drones have shifted the battlefield. Ukraine now holds the ability to project power at range, disrupting Russian operations and forcing a defensive posture far behind the lines.

As production scales toward that 1 million target for 2024, the range and frequency of these strikes will only increase.
