Brazil’s Jair Bolsonaro Concludes His Tenure as President

On the 7th of July, 2023, Jair Bolsonaro, the 38th president of Brazil, culminated his tenure as the nation’s leader, bringing an end to a presidency that commenced in 2019. Born on the 21st of March, 1955, in Glicério, São Paulo, Bolsonaro’s life has been characterized by his national conservatism and advocacy for economically liberal and pro-market policies. Starting his military career in 1973, Bolsonaro served as a military officer before graduating from the Military Academy of Agulhas Negras in 1977.

This formative experience significantly influenced his views on national security and defense. However, it was his 1986 article in Veja magazine, which critiqued the low wages of military officers, that propelled him into the public eye, leading to his arrest and detention for 15 days.

Following his departure from the army, Bolsonaro was elected to the Municipal Chamber of Rio de Janeiro in 1988, marking the beginning of his political career. As a congressman, Bolsonaro represented the state of Rio de Janeiro in the Chamber of Deputies from 1991 to 2019. Throughout his 27-year tenure, he became renowned for his national conservatism, championing policies that prioritized national security, law and order, and traditional values.

His views often sparked debate, yet they also resonated with many Brazilians seeking a stronger, more decisive leader. In 2018, Bolsonaro decided to run for president, campaigning on a platform that encompassed economically liberal and pro-market policies.

His message struck a chord with many voters, particularly those who felt that Brazil’s economy required greater openness to foreign investment and trade. Despite the hurdles he faced during his presidential campaign, including an assassination attempt on the 6th of September, 2018, Bolsonaro led in the first-round results on the 7th of October, 2018. He eventually triumphed over Fernando Haddad in the second round on the 28th of October, 2018, securing the presidency with a pledge to transform Brazil’s economy and politics.

During his presidency, Bolsonaro implemented policies aimed at reducing bureaucracy, boosting foreign investment, and stimulating economic growth. However, his tenure was also marred by controversy, particularly concerning his management of environmental and social issues.

As Bolsonaro’s presidency draws to a close, it is evident that his legacy will be multifaceted. While some Brazilians will remember him as a resolute leader who combatted corruption and fostered economic growth, others will criticize his handling of social and environmental issues. As Brazil embarks on a new chapter of leadership, there are numerous questions about the country’s future.

Will the new government continue to promote economically liberal and pro-market policies, or will it lean towards a more interventionist approach? How will the country tackle the social and environmental challenges that have elicited controversy during Bolsonaro’s presidency?

As the nation moves forward, these questions will likely dominate the discourse, guiding the debate about Brazil’s future and its role in the world. With a new government in place, Brazilians and international observers will be closely watching to see how the country confronts the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, and how it builds upon the legacy of Jair Bolsonaro’s presidency.
