NEW YORK, Sept. 5 — The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly is now underway in New York, with world leaders converging on the SDGs as the centerpiece of global decision-making. The session is framed as a decisive final push toward the 2030 Agenda, a decade-long effort that has already expanded access to education, clean water, healthcare and digital connectivity for billions of people. Yet the scale of what remains undone hangs over the room.

Only 36 per cent of SDG targets are currently on track or making moderate progress, according to UN figures. Secretary-General António Guterres framed the stakes in a statement on July 7: “Together, let us make a decisive final push to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and build a healthy, prosperous future for all.”

The calendar of high-stakes diplomacy

The session’s flagship SDG Moment arrives on September 18 under the banner “Together, we can get there,” a three-hour event built around stories of transformation from communities, countries and regions, with live performances and dynamic conversations. The General Debate follows from September 22 to 28, when heads of state and government lay out their positions amid complex global challenges. The UN Department of Global Communications hosts the SDG Media Zone from September 21 to 25, featuring live interviews, discussions and social media opportunities, all streamed on UN Web TV.

The Goals Lounge, convened by the UN Deputy Secretary-General and hosted by the UN Office for Partnerships, runs from September 14 to 25 with unscripted dialogues and interactive experiences. Special high-level meetings punctuate the fortnight.

September 23 marks the 40th anniversary of the Declaration on the Right to Development, adopted by the General Assembly in 1986. That same day, the Secretary-General convenes a High-level Event on Climate Action and the Just Transition, focused on accelerating a just energy transition to renewables, mobilizing affordable finance for developing countries, and delivering adaptation and resilience support. September 24 brings a High-level Meeting on Sea-level Rise, addressing threats to small island developing states and low-lying coastal areas.

A High-level Meeting on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response follows on September 25, guided by multilateral and intergenerational approaches grounded in equity and solidarity.

A harder look at the numbers

The 2026 Gender Snapshot, released September 17, delivers a sobering counterpoint to the session’s forward momentum. Progress toward women’s equal participation in political leadership has lost momentum, the report finds, stressing that achieving gender equality requires equal access to positions of real authority — not just seats at the table. The International Day of Peace is observed September 21 under the theme “Invest in Peace: For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day,” honoring everyday architects of peace.

The session closes with a High-level Plenary Meeting on September 29 commemorating and promoting the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. All events are streamed live on UN Web TV, with media resources available at media.un.org.

What to watch next: whether the rhetorical commitment to the SDGs translates into concrete pledges during the General Debate — and whether the gender snapshot’s warning about stalled political leadership reshapes the conversations that follow.
