Two Dead, Five Missing After Danube River Boat Collision Incident

Authorities confirmed that a crash between two vessels on the Danube River close to the Hungarian town of Verőce left two people dead and five others unaccounted for. The accident took place in the afternoon of May 19, 2024, prompting an immediate search and rescue effort along a stretch of the river that serves as a major transport and recreation corridor in Central Europe.

Emergency responders were alerted after reports of a collision involving a passenger boat and another craft. Rescue teams, including divers and patrol vessels, combed the waters near Verőce, which lies roughly forty kilometres north of Budapest. Officials reported that the bodies of the two deceased were recovered from the river, while the search for the five missing individuals continued into the evening. The cause of the collision remains under investigation.

Investigators are examining factors such as visibility and the volume of river traffic at the time of the incident. The Danube, Europe’s second‑longest river after the Volga, stretches for 2,850 kilometres from Germany’s Black Forest to the Black Sea.

It flows through or borders ten countries, including Hungary, where it splits the capital Budapest before continuing northward past Verőce. For centuries the river has been a vital artery for trade and travel, once marking the frontier of the Roman Empire. In contemporary use it supports a mixture of commercial shipping, cruise tourism and local boating, a combination that can generate hazards on busy sections.

Local officials have urged boaters to exercise caution while the rescue operation proceeds. The five missing persons are believed to have been aboard one of the vessels involved in the collision.

Family members have gathered on the riverbank, awaiting updates from rescue crews who are contending with strong currents and debris. Hungarian water police are coordinating the effort, assisted by neighbouring communities along the Danube. This part of the river near Verőce is noted for its scenic bends and moderate flow, yet it experiences heavy use during the spring and summer months.

The Danube links four national capitals—Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade—and remains a key route for cargo and passenger ships. Environmental groups have long advocated for stricter safety regulations and cleaner practices on the waterway, arguing that pollution from vessels and runoff endangers the river’s ecosystem.

They contend that the collision highlights the need for improved navigation standards to safeguard both human life and the natural environment. As the search enters a second day, Hungarian authorities are expected to release further information about the vessels involved and the circumstances surrounding the crash. The incident has cast a shadow over the region, where the Danube is not only a transportation link but also a source of recreation and livelihood.

For now, the primary focus remains on locating the five missing individuals and understanding how an ordinary day on the river turned tragic.
