DUBAI — Against the backdrop of London’s relentless pace, a British expat has traded the capital’s grey rush for the desert ambition of Dubai, and she has no regrets. Alexandra Cooper, 33, a content creator originally from a small seaside town in Cornwall, moved to the UAE in early 2025 with her husband, Afsar Uddin, and their cats. The decision was sparked by a holiday in late 2023.
“We came with the idea in the back of our minds that it could be somewhere we might live one day, but at that point it still felt more like a fleeting thought than a real plan,” Cooper said. “But once we were here, something just clicked.
We absolutely fell in love with it.” What is at stake for many Europeans considering the Gulf is a recalibration of life’s priorities. Cooper, who spent 13 years in London before the move, said the British capital gave her excitement and opportunity but lacked a sense of balance. Dubai, she found, offered that equilibrium.
“In the UK, my life was much more fast-paced and often centred around work, commuting and trying to fit everything in,” she explained. “Dubai has given me a better quality of life and more space to enjoy my day-to-day routine.” The couple was wowed by what Cooper described as “the energy, the lifestyle, the opportunities and the feeling that people were here to build something for themselves.” That holiday planted a seed.
“It quickly went from, ‘Could we live here?’ to ‘Yes, we can really see ourselves building a life here,’” she said. “That trip planted the seed, and over time it kept growing until moving to Dubai became one of our biggest goals. By 2025, we made it happen.” Cooper has transitioned completely from a senior leader in education to content creation, a passion turned vocation.
Her husband works as a luxury and supercar specialist at Trend Auto Dubai. For Cooper, the move was not a fleeting fantasy but a deliberate pursuit. The couple’s journey from a Cornish seaside town to the modern metropolis of Dubai is a story of how a holiday can rewrite a life.
