Russias War on Ukraine Enters Deadly Thirteenth Year Without End

The Russo-Ukrainian War has now entered its thirteenth year, with no resolution in sight as trench lines remain largely static and diplomatic avenues remain blocked. What began as a regional crisis in February 2014 has evolved into the most destructive conflict Europe has witnessed since World War II, reshaping borders, displacing millions, and challenging the post-war international order.

From Revolution to Full-Scale Invasion

The conflict traces its immediate origins to the Revolution of Dignity, also known as the Euromaidan protests, which led to the ouster of President Viktor Yanukovych in February 2014. Russia responded by occupying and annexing Crimea that same month. Simultaneously, Russian-backed militants seized territory in the Donbas region, establishing the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics.

Those early years were marked by cyberwarfare, naval incidents, and static trench warfare in eastern Ukraine. International courts later determined that Russia exercised control over the separatist regions.

Diplomatic efforts to halt the fighting produced the Minsk Protocol, signed on September 5, 2014, and its follow-on, Minsk II, signed on February 12, 2015. Both agreements aimed to establish ceasefires and a political roadmap, but they failed to end hostilities. Ceasefires were frequently broken as Russia continued to support separatist forces.

Over time, Moscow increased its military presence near the Ukrainian border and demanded that Kyiv remain outside the NATO alliance. The current phase of the war began with a full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022.

This escalation shattered any remaining hope that the Minsk framework could restore peace. By 2025, the front line had largely stabilized, with Russia controlling about 18% of Ukrainian territory, including Crimea and parts of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson oblasts. The fighting transformed a regional struggle into the largest conventional conflict in Europe since 1945.

Human Toll and Key Battles

The human cost has been staggering. According to United Nations estimates as of early 2025, the war has caused over 500,000 military casualties on both sides and more than 30,000 civilian deaths. The displacement crisis has been equally severe: the UN High Commissioner for Refugees has recorded over 6 million Ukrainian refugees across Europe, with millions more internally displaced.

The conflict continues to impact global stability through this loss of life and the redrawing of borders. Major battles have defined the war’s trajectory.

The Siege of Mariupol, which lasted from February to May 2022, became a symbol of Ukrainian resistance as defenders held out against overwhelming odds. The Battle of Bakhmut, raging from August 2022 to May 2023, devolved into a grinding war of attrition that consumed enormous resources on both sides. In 2023, Ukraine launched a counteroffensive that reclaimed some territory but failed to achieve a strategic breakthrough, leaving the front line largely unchanged. The conflict also saw the involvement of international legal bodies.

The International Court of Justice and other courts have ruled on aspects of the war, including determinations that Russia controlled the separatist regions. These rulings underscore the broader challenge to international laws regarding sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Diplomatic Efforts and What Lies Ahead

Diplomatic efforts have been fitful and largely unsuccessful. Multiple rounds of talks took place in Belarus and Turkey during 2022, but they failed to produce a lasting ceasefire.

One notable achievement was the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which ran from July 2022 to July 2023 and allowed Ukrainian agricultural exports to reach global markets, easing food price pressures in developing nations. However, that agreement expired and was not renewed. More recently, China and India have stepped into the mediation void, with Beijing and New Delhi exploring possible proposals for a negotiated settlement.

The wider picture across Europe is one of rearmament, as nations bolster their defenses in response to the conflict. Yet for Ukraine, the arithmetic of war remains brutal.

With the front line largely static and Western aid subject to political cycles in donor countries, the question of how and when this war ends has no clear answer in any capital. What to watch next: the coming winter will test Ukraine’s energy grid, which has been repeatedly targeted, as well as Europe’s political will to maintain support. Mediation efforts by China and India may produce new proposals, but without a shift in battlefield realities, a negotiated settlement remains distant.

The war continues to redefine European security and to challenge the principles that have governed international relations since 1945.
