IRGC Admiral Tangsiri Leads Irans Naval Aggression

TEHRAN, July 7 — The commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy, Rear Admiral Alireza Tangsiri, remains in operational control of the force that attacked shipping in the Strait of Hormuz on April 27, 2025. He has held this position since 2018. Tangsiri succeeded Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi.

He reports directly to IRGC commander Major General Hossein Salami. The chain of command is clear: Tangsiri runs the naval arm of the Guard, and his forces are equipped with fast attack boats, drones, and anti-ship missiles.

That hardware was used in the April 27 strikes. Tangsiri oversaw the 2019 seizure of the British-flagged tanker Stena Impero. That operation set a precedent for state-directed harassment of commercial shipping under the guise of maritime law enforcement.

The April 27 attacks followed the same playbook, but with live fire. Tangsiri is known for a hardline stance against the United States.

That posture is not rhetorical. His forces have the equipment to act on it — fast boats for swarming, drones for surveillance, and anti-ship missiles for stand-off strikes. The Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for global oil transit, is the stage.

The IRGC Navy’s structure under Tangsiri reveals a deliberate decentralisation of threat. Small, fast units can be harder to track than a traditional fleet. That makes a single interdiction or a coordinated volley difficult to deter without escalating to a broader engagement.

The catch for Western navies is that any response risks triggering exactly the wider conflict Iran’s hardliners might calculate works in their favour. The April 27 attack was not an isolated incident.

It fits a documented pattern under Tangsiri’s command: seize, harass, or strike, then let the diplomatic machinery spin. What to watch next is whether Tangsiri’s forces attempt another seizure or attack before the end of the summer shipping season. The IRGC Navy has both the mandate and the means.

Major General Salami has shown no public sign of reining in his subordinate.
