Zelenskyy Leads Ukraine in War with Russia, Balancing Leadership & Strategy

Volodymyr Zelenskyy

KYIV, July 7 — Against the backdrop of a war now in its fifth year, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy continues to navigate a conflict that has reshaped not only his nation but the broader European security order. The former comedian, who took office on May 20, 2019, with 73 percent of the vote in the presidential election’s second round, has become an unlikely wartime leader. Zelenskyy’s path to the presidency was anything but conventional.

Before entering politics, he built a career as a comedian, actor, and founder of the production company Kvartal 95. His claim to fame was the television series “Servant of the People,” in which he played a teacher who unexpectedly becomes president.

When the full-scale Russian invasion began on February 24, 2022, Zelenskyy made a choice that defined his leadership: he remained in Kyiv while many foreign diplomats evacuated. That decision turned him into a global symbol of Ukrainian resistance. Since then, Zelenskyy has taken his country’s case to the world’s most powerful forums.

He has delivered speeches before the United Nations, the European Union, and the United States Congress, each time pressing the same urgent demand: more military aid. His requests have been specific — long-range missiles, fighter jets, drones — and his tone has been consistent.

The wider picture of the conflict has shifted over time. Under Zelenskyy’s leadership, Ukraine launched counteroffensives in 2022 and 2023, recapturing territory in the Kharkiv and Kherson regions. More recently, Zelenskyy has signaled an expansion of Ukraine’s operational reach.

On September 21, 2024, he stated that a Ukrainian drone strike on the Taneco refinery in Tatarstan proved that Siberia is now “within reach” of Ukrainian forces. That statement reflected a deliberate strategy to carry the war deep into Russian territory.

The Man Behind the Presidency

Zelenskyy’s background remains a subject of fascination, both inside Ukraine and abroad. That he was a comedian before becoming president is not incidental; it shaped his communication style, his ability to connect with ordinary Ukrainians, and his understanding of media and narrative. The series “Servant of the People” was not just a show; it was a political springboard, giving him a ready-made platform and a recognizable brand when he entered the real political arena.

Zelenskyy has also been a relentless advocate for Ukraine’s integration into Western institutions. He has pushed for NATO membership, arguing that only the alliance’s collective defense guarantee can secure Ukraine’s long-term future.

Simultaneously, he has pursued European Union membership, seeing it as both a strategic anchor and a recognition of Ukraine’s European identity. Against this backdrop, the coming months will test both Ukraine’s military capacity and the endurance of its Western support. Zelenskyy’s ability to hold the coalition together, maintain domestic morale, and adapt to battlefield realities will determine the course of the war.
