Ukrainian Drones Strike Russia’s Largest Oil Refinery in Tatarstan

MOSCOW, September 20 — On September 20, Ukrainian drones struck the Taneco oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk, Tatarstan. Taneco is Russia’s largest oil refinery, operated by Tatneft, and it processes roughly 360,000 barrels of oil per day. The strike landed approximately 1,300 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the attack demonstrates Siberia is now “within reach” of Ukrainian forces. Zelenskyy’s comment refers to the increased range and capability of Ukrainian drone technology, which has been developed with support from Western allies.

This strike is part of a broader Ukrainian campaign to target Russian energy infrastructure, aiming to disrupt Russia’s war funding. The Taneco attack is one of the deepest Ukrainian strikes inside Russia since the full-scale invasion began on February 24, 2022. Russia’s Defense Ministry reported that air defense systems intercepted several drones over Tatarstan, but debris caused a fire at the refinery.

No casualties were reported. The incident underscores the expanding reach of Ukraine’s drone warfare and the vulnerability of Russia’s energy sector.

The timing of the strike is also notable. It occurred amid ongoing Ukrainian military operations in Russia’s Kursk Oblast, which began on August 6, 2024, when Ukrainian forces crossed the border and seized territory. Zelenskyy’s reference to Siberia being “within reach” signals to Russian energy executives and international investors that Ukraine’s drone range is no longer limited to border regions.

The development of this capability, with Western support, has been a steady process. The Taneco strike is the public proof of concept. The Taneco refinery is located deep inside Russian territory, far from the front lines.

Its distance from Ukraine — roughly 1,300 kilometers — was once thought to provide a measure of security. That assumption is now in question.

The strike underscores the expanding reach of Ukraine’s drone warfare and the vulnerability of Russia’s energy sector. No casualties were reported in the attack. The broader Ukrainian campaign against Russian energy infrastructure is not new.

Previous strikes have hit oil depots, refineries, and fuel storage facilities in border regions and the occupied territories. What is new is the range.

The Taneco strike demonstrates that Ukrainian drones can now reach targets that were previously out of reach. The technology is evolving, and the geography of the conflict is expanding.
