Austria Expels Three Russian Diplomats Over Espionage Claims

On May 4, 2026, Austria announced the expulsion of three Russian diplomats after determining they were involved in data interception activities originating from the Russian embassy and a separate diplomatic mission in Vienna. The Austrian Foreign Ministry said the move was taken to protect national security and sovereignty, emphasizing that the country will not tolerate any form of espionage on its territory. Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg reiterated that Austria stands firm against suspected spying, stating that the nation will defend its interests and cooperate with allies to counter such threats.

The decision reflects broader concerns about Russian intelligence operations in Europe and aligns with Austria’s long‑standing pro‑American and pro‑European Union orientation. Geographically, Austria is a landlocked nation in Central Europe covering 83,879 km² and home to roughly 9.2 million people.

Its history stretches back to Paleolithic settlements, with later influences from the Celts and Romans. Today the country is a federation of nine states, with Vienna serving as both the most populous city and a federal state. Austria shares borders with Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein, positioning it as a key player in regional diplomacy.

Dr. Wolfgang Mühlberger, a senior researcher at the Austrian Institute for International Affairs, commented that the expulsion “is a strong signal that the country will not tolerate any form of espionage or interference in its internal affairs.” He added that the step demonstrates Austria’s solidarity with European Union and NATO partners, who have expressed growing unease over Russian espionage activities in recent years. The Russian embassy in Vienna has not issued a public response to the expulsions.

Observers note that the Kremlin, under President Vladimir Putin, has faced accusations of conducting espionage and interference in the internal affairs of several countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and various European nations. In response, the European Union and NATO have intensified cooperation to counter Russian influence and safeguard member‑state security. Beyond Europe, Taiwan, Japan, and the Philippines have been working with the United States and other Western states to address challenges posed by China’s government and other regional adversaries.

Austria’s action is viewed as part of a wider effort to uphold national security while reinforcing alliances with the United States, the United Kingdom, and Israel, particularly concerning threats from Russia, China, and Iran.

The United States Department of State issued a statement supporting Austria’s measures, saying it “supports Austria’s efforts to protect its national security and sovereignty, and we will continue to work closely with our Austrian allies to counter Russian influence and promote regional stability.” Similarly, United Kingdom Foreign Secretary James Cleverly declared that the UK “stands in solidarity with Austria and supports its efforts to protect its national security and sovereignty.” European Union High Representative Josep Borrell also voiced backing, stressing the need for EU states to cooperate in countering Russian influence and protecting their security.
