Taipei, January 3, 2020 — cybernewschronicle.com — Taiwan’s
Air Force General Shen Yi-ming and seven other defense officials were confirmed
dead after their helicopter crashed in a mountainous part of Taipei due to poor
weather. The Ministry of National Defense (MND) first broke the news Thursday morning with an initial report that Shen was among eight people missing after a UH-60M Black Hawk helicopter made an emergency landing. Few
hours later, during an afternoon news conference on the same day, MND confirmed
the death of Shen and seven officials.

They have also announced that five
people were able to survive. Military
chief Shen, 62, took oath of office just last year.

Prior to this, he
became the 22nd Air Force commander of the Air Force and Deputy Minister of
Defense. In a Facebook post, Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen expressed her sadness about the death of the military officials, including Shen, whom he regarded as an “outstanding general.”  “I would like to extend my deepest condolences
to the families of the victims,” the president wrote.

MND
said that the aircraft was off to Yilan for a routine mission ahead of the
Chinese New Year but it was forced to land after losing connection with the
aviation authorities. The
cause of the plane crash remains unclear as of writing.

The incident has significant implications for Taiwan’s military, which has been modernizing its forces in recent years to enhance its defense capabilities. The country’s armed forces play a crucial role in maintaining national security, particularly in the face of ongoing tensions with neighboring countries. The loss of high-ranking officials, including General Shen, is likely to be felt across the military establishment, and may impact the country’s defense strategy and planning.

Taiwan’s military has a long history of operating in challenging weather conditions, particularly in the mountainous regions of the island. The country’s terrain and climate can make aviation operations hazardous, and the military has implemented various safety measures to mitigate these risks. However, accidents can still occur, highlighting the importance of ongoing training and safety protocols.

The investigation into the cause of the crash will be closely watched, as it may reveal important lessons for improving the safety of military aviation operations. The reaction of Taiwan’s President, Tsai Ing-wen, reflects the significance of the incident and the respect in which General Shen was held.

As the head of the military, General Shen played a key role in shaping the country’s defense policy and strategy. His experience and expertise will be difficult to replace, and his loss will be felt across the military and political establishment. The president’s expression of condolences to the families of the victims also underscores the human impact of the tragedy, and the need for support and comfort in the aftermath of such a devastating event.

The incident is also likely to have international implications, particularly in the context of regional security dynamics. Taiwan’s military relationships with other countries, including the United States, are an important aspect of its defense strategy.

The loss of key personnel may impact these relationships, and may also be seen as an opportunity for other countries to reassess their own military cooperation with Taiwan. As the investigation into the crash continues, the international community will be watching closely to see how the incident affects Taiwan’s military and its relationships with other countries.
